Family/Home Learning Plan

In light of the recent COVID-19 events, with more and more families choosing to keep their preschooler  home this year, Wonder Years Learning Academy has developed at home Family/Home Learning Lessons.  Each lesson is designed with 18+ activities aligned with the North Dakota Learning Standards. Aligning each activity to one or more of the ND Learning Standards ensures your child will receive a well rounded curriculum to support the whole child as they prepare for Kindergarten.

Each kit will come with a 2-week learning template packed with ideas appropriate for the home and offers extension activities to ensure your child is able experience an activity in more than one way. Each activity will also include instructions for how to carry out the lesson and how to support your child to ensure a successful experience.  The kit will also include all supplies required for each of the activities so you do not have to purchase anything extra.

Each kit will also include other ideas to extend learning.  Recipes to try at home, poems and finger plays to encourage literacy, and resources for finding other great activities.

Parents! I thought about you too! I mean, this is a FAMILY learning plan. Each kit will include some parent resources, ideas for social/emotions growth, Literacy ideas to support your child in the community and at home, ideas to support your child's motor development and much more to help you on your continued journey raising a healthy, confident preschooler.

In your kit you will find a book which ties to the theme. The book will offer your child an opportunity to grow their vocabulary, talk about the theme of the book, characters, settings, retell or recall the sequence of the story, and build comprehension.  Reading the story several times allows opportunities for more meaningful conversation and embeds the lesson into memory.

Vocabulary is critical to a child’s success for these reasons:

  • Vocabulary growth is directly related to school achievement

  • The size of a child’s vocabulary in kindergarten predicts the ability to learn to read

  • Vocabulary helps children to think and learn about the world

  • Expanding a child’s knowledge of words provides unlimited access to new information
